A recent experiment revealed that quitting Facebook for a month in exchange for $100 can have profoundly beneficial effects on users’ psychological well-being. The results of this study, conducted in the United States, demonstrate that participants, after a month of disconnection, not only gained time but also reevaluated their relationship with the platform, preferring not to return as often.
Context of the Experiment
In the fall of 2018, researchers launched a unique initiative involving several thousand Americans. The objective? To evaluate what would happen if these Facebook users agreed to deactivate their accounts for four weeks, in exchange for a financial compensation of $100. This amount was designed to be appealing without encouraging a bidding war among participants, who were reluctant to abandon the social network.
The Results of the Study
Among the 2,743 people recruited, just over half, or 61%, agreed to disconnect. The researchers aimed to observe and compare the effects of a prolonged interruption of Facebook on the well-being and lifestyle habits of the participants.
A Return of Precious Time
The experiment revealed a significant finding: participants reclaimed almost an hour per day, time they used in enriching ways. Rather than turning to other social media platforms, they preferred to engage in various activities such as spending more time with loved ones or increasing their hobbies. This change in behavior became a part of their daily lives, proving to be sustainable beyond the trial period.
Reduced Use of Facebook
By the end of the experiment, it was found that users who had deactivated their accounts spent about twelve minutes less on Facebook, representing a reduction of approximately 25%. This change reflects a new user approach to the social network, encouraging them not only to reduce their screen time but also to consider healthier alternatives.
Well-being and Perception of the Platform
The results also showed a significant improvement in the psychological well-being of participants after their disconnection. On average, indicators such as life satisfaction and anxiety experienced a slight increase. This may seem modest, but it corresponds to benefits comparable to those observed in more substantial psychological interventions. Participants became aware that the time and attention they devoted to Facebook had a considerable impact on their serenity.
The Trade-offs of Absence
However, such a disconnection is not without cost. Indeed, those who chose to take a break noticed a decrease in their awareness of current events, with a clear drop in the information they followed. The researchers also observed that political polarization decreased, which may be positive in some contexts but raises questions about the impact of such separation on social engagement.
A Reevaluation of Priorities
An intriguing aspect of the experiment’s results is how participants reevaluated their relationship with Facebook. By drawing a sum for disconnection, users realized they did not want to return to their former usage habits. When they were again asked about the monetary compensation they would accept for another period of deactivation, the requested amount had decreased by 14%. This underscores a shift in perspective regarding the value of the platform.
Reflections on Social Media Dependency
The results of this study illuminate the challenges presented by social media dependency, as well as the difficulty of envisioning a world where these platforms are not omnipresent. Users often wish to reduce their time spent on social media, but the fear of becoming isolated prompts them to continue their usage. Many, however, do realize the benefits of time spent without these constant distractions, as evidenced by the shared disconnection experiences of other users.
Finally, it is worth noting that this research questions our relationship with technology and our time. Although many studies show nuanced results, this one reveals encouraging perspectives on the possibility of living life less dependent on Facebook. Participants who hesitated to embark on this adventure ultimately discovered a form of freedom, revisiting their way of living with technology.
