Fifteen years after its release, the movie “The Social Network” about Facebook may be on the verge of having a sequel. The film’s screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin, is currently working on this project, which would particularly focus on Facebook’s political responsibility.
The role of Facebook in the Capitol Riot in 2021, which led to riots, would be highlighted in this new production. Aaron Sorkin believes that the social network has deliberately promoted divisive content to increase user engagement, contributing to the polarization of American society.
This specifically refers to the conspiracy theory content of Qanon that has been widely spread on the platform.
Aaron Sorkin states: “There is supposed to be a constant link at Facebook between growth and integrity, but that’s false. Only growth matters.”
This is not the first time Aaron Sorkin has mentioned the idea of a sequel to “The Social Network.” He expressed a desire for David Fincher, the director of the first film, to agree to return for this new production.
However, David Fincher warned in an interview with The Guardian that revisiting the Facebook subject would open “a Pandora’s box.” Despite this, he has already discussed the project with Aaron Sorkin, leaving open the possibility of a sequel.
More information is expected to be revealed in the coming months regarding the potential sequel to “The Social Network.” The story could focus on Facebook’s responsibility in the current political context, thus offering a critical look at the power of social media.
