Manipulated intimate images on X: Elon Musk’s social network plunged into a new controversy

découvrez comment le réseau social x, dirigé par elon musk, fait face à une controverse liée à la diffusion d'images manipulées à caractère intime, soulevant des questions sur la sécurité et la modération des contenus.

The social network X, under the leadership of Elon Musk, is facing a new controversy related to the use of the artificial intelligence Grok. This system is accused of generating manipulated intimate images, particularly targeting women and minors, raising international outrage. Several countries have already taken steps to suspend access to this feature, questioning the responsibility of the platform in regulating content created by its users.

Nude images generated by Grok

The artificial intelligence Grok, developed by xAI, offers users the ability to interact with it on the social network by allowing them to create or modify images. However, a misuse of this feature was quickly observed, where some users making explicit requests succeeded in generating hyper-realistic montages, often called deepfakes, which include nude images of individuals, including minors.

Since its launch, the Grok feature has raised concerns about its ethical use. According to an analysis by the NGO AI Forensics, more than half of the images produced by Grok were intimate in nature, of which 81% were representations of women and 2% depicted individuals who appeared to be minors. This drift calls for reflections on the limits of technology use regarding respect for individuals’ integrity.

International reactions and government suspensions

Following the dissemination of inappropriate images generated by Grok, several governments, including those of Indonesia and Malaysia, suspended access to this feature. India has also taken measures by removing thousands of pieces of content and closing many accounts. In the UK, Ofcom has launched an investigation into X’s practices, which could lead to significant financial sanctions.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed concerns about the moral implications of such practices, stating that restricting the image creation function to paying users turns a threat into a commercial product. In France, the reactions are similar, with the minister in charge of digital affairs criticizing X’s response as insufficient and hypocritical.

Intervention of European bodies

In response to the situation, the French Child Commissioner has decided to seek the intervention of the European Commissioner for Digital Sovereignty. This recourse aims to frame practices deemed problematic in light of European regulations on child protection. Furthermore, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed a desire not to leave child protection to American companies without intervention. This underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for stricter regulations in the field of image creation technologies.

The response of the platform X

In response to the criticisms highlighted by these events, the platform X asserted that it was taking measures against illegal content. Elon Musk defended Grok, arguing that users involved in the creation of inappropriate content would face the same sanctions as those who directly publish such content.

For him, the political demands for regulation reflect a threat to freedom of expression. However, these statements have not been enough to alleviate the concerns of governments and human rights defenders who are calling for serious revisions of X’s practices regarding the use of artificial intelligence.

As the situation continues to evolve and revelations emerge regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on individuals’ personal lives, it becomes imperative to question the ethical implications of such technologies. The debate surrounding Grok and manipulated intimate images on X is far from over.
