Young people abandon Facebook in favor of Instagram and TikTok
The dynamics of social media in France is undergoing a marked transformation, especially among young users. A recent study conducted by the Flashs institute for Hostinger reveals that Facebook, while still widely used, is facing a significant decline among the 18-24 age group. These young people now prefer platforms like Instagram and TikTok to share their lives and interact with each other. This trend highlights an evolution in online behaviors moving away from traditional communication spaces.
The decline of Facebook
Despite its significant popularity among the general population, Facebook sees its usage collapse among young users. While 61% of the French still frequent this social network, only 22% of 18-24 year olds use it. This generation is investing its time instead on other platforms that offer more visual and interactive content. Instagram, with its photo-sharing magic and stories, and TikTok, with its short and rhythmic videos, massively attract young users looking for a more dynamic experience.
The power of Instagram and TikTok
These two social networks have managed to capture the attention of young people through their innovative formats and their ability to create viral trends. On Instagram, 83% of young users use it regularly, favoring the sharing of moments from their daily lives while interacting with a large community. On the other hand, TikTok also attracts 79% of 18-24 year olds who enjoy the creativity and humor of the app. These changes are not solely based on personal preferences, but also on a need for belonging to a community that values authenticity and originality.
WhatsApp emerges as the favorite choice for families
Alongside this evolution in young people’s habits, WhatsApp is gaining popularity among families. It is the only social network to maintain a uniform usage across all generations, with a usage rate varying from 37% to 50% among different age groups. This platform has become the main communication tool for families looking for a practical and functional solution to exchange messages, photos, or videos easily.
An instant and efficient communication
WhatsApp stands out for its user-friendliness and accessibility, making it a preferred choice for families, offering direct connection without the distractions that other social networks can bring. The ability to create groups facilitates exchanges between family members, allowing them to easily share information or life moments. This feature is particularly appreciated by parents who want to maintain a constant link with their children.
An alternative to hyper-connection
In a world where hyper-connection seems to be the norm, WhatsApp positions itself as a more soothing alternative. Users appreciate the ability to communicate on this platform without the pressure of “likes” and comments, which characterize other networks such as Facebook or Instagram. Many French people find a balance by using WhatsApp to stay connected without experiencing the sometimes stressful effects of other forms of social media.
