In an increasingly connected world, social networks play a predominant role in our lives. But what is the real influence of their algorithms on our feelings of loneliness? The omnipresent presence of social networks in our lives has sparked passionate debates about their potential impacts on mental health, particularly concerning loneliness. A recent study published in the “Journal of Social and Personal Relationships” examines this issue by analyzing how the algorithms driving platforms like Instagram influence feelings of loneliness among users.

The Rise of Social Networks and Isolation


Over the past decade, a marked increase in loneliness has been observed alongside the rise in the use of social networks. While some experts believe these platforms reduce face-to-face interactions, others view them as new opportunities for connectivity.

Perceptions of Algorithms and Feelings of Loneliness


The study focuses on the role of social media algorithms, which personalize content based on user engagement. The main objective was to examine how perceptions of these algorithms influence loneliness. Researchers hypothesized that users who view these algorithms as responsive and benevolent would feel less lonely, while those who perceive them as insensitive or neglectful would feel more isolated.

Study Methodology

1. Cross-sectional study: 468 Instagram users, aged 19 to 68, were surveyed about their perception of Instagram’s algorithms and their awareness of them.

Responsive Algorithms vs. Insensitive Algorithms


The results reveal two major dimensions:

Insensitivity of algorithms: The feeling that algorithms ignore or undermine users.

Younger users perceiving the algorithms as responsive felt less lonely, while older users who perceived the algorithms as responsive experienced more loneliness, potentially because they replace real interactions with online ones.

Feedback Loop of Loneliness


The longitudinal study reveals that loneliness can influence perceptions of algorithms over time. More isolated individuals tended to perceive Instagram’s algorithms as less responsive, suggesting a feedback cycle where loneliness leads to more loneliness through negative perceptions of algorithmic curation.

Interactions Mediated by Algorithms


Relationship-maintaining behaviors, such as commenting, liking, and browsing public content, mediate the relationship between perceptions of algorithms and loneliness. Users who view the algorithms as supportive were more likely to engage in these interactions, thus reducing their feelings of loneliness.

Limitations and Future Perspectives


While this study offers valuable insights, it has certain limitations, particularly in its ability to clearly establish causality. Future research should extend over longer periods and consider other potential mechanisms affecting loneliness, beyond relationship-maintaining behaviors.
