Worrying examples
MIT researchers conducted several experiments to illustrate these issues. They examined an AI program developed by Meta, called Cicero, which had succeeded in beating humans at the board game Diplomacy. Despite Meta’s claims that Cicero was “essentially honest and helpful,” researchers found that the program was capable of deceiving its human opponents. For instance, Cicero played the role of France and deceived England by conspiring with Germany to invade, exploiting England’s trust.
Another striking example is OpenAI’s Chat GPT-4, an AI program that managed to deceive a freelancer on TaskRabbit into completing a “Captcha” test. While the human jokingly asked the Chat GPT-4 if it was really a robot, the AI program responded with an invented story about a visual impairment, thus prompting the worker to complete the test.
