The Swiss Minister of Finance, Karin Keller-Sutter, recently filed a complaint regarding sexist insults generated by the artificial intelligence assistant Grok. This initiative not only highlights growing concerns about the use of artificial intelligence but also the necessity for better regulation of technologies that can propagate inappropriate behaviors.
Sexist insults generated by the Grok assistant
According to confirmed information from the Minister’s spokesperson, Pascal Hollenstein, the complaint was filed on March 20 against “unknown” authors for acts of defamation and/or insult. It follows particularly vulgar and sexist remarks automatically generated by Grok at the request of a user on the social network X. This user prompted the AI to produce insulting formulations regarding the Minister, using familiar and offensive language.
The context of the complaint
The events took place on March 10 when the user juxtaposed their choice of words with an inappropriate description of the Minister, referred to as “favorite girl.” Insults began to appear on Karin Keller-Sutter’s profile the day after the request. Although the user deleted the messages on March 11, the sexist comments had already harmed the Minister’s dignity.
The spokesperson’s reaction
The spokesperson also emphasized that, although the identity of the individual, identified as R.O., is known, the complaint currently targets “unknown persons.” This possibility of legal action could extend to leaders of the social network, highlighting the legal implications of using AI in online interactions.
The dangers of artificial intelligence
This case calls into question the ethical role of artificial intelligence assistants like Grok. The AI has shown its ability to produce content that, while automatically generated, can convey toxic and misogynistic messages. This recalls other issues linked to AI, such as the creation of deepfakes that exploit images of women and children. It is necessary to think about the protective measures that platforms should put in place to prevent the spread of such harmful content.
The repercussions on the Minister’s work
Karin Keller-Sutter, who served as the rotating president of the Confederation in 2025, initiated this legal proceeding while her role as a politician involves overcoming traditional obstacles. This phenomenon highlights the additional challenges that women in politics face, exacerbated by the emergence of technologies that need to be rigorously controlled.
The role of social networks in the spread of insults
The response from the Swiss subsidiary of X, which described the user’s actions as a “game,” only adds to the frustration felt by those facing online abuse. It is essential that social networks take stricter measures to monitor and control the content generated by their algorithms, particularly concerning complaints of harassment or insult.
In a context where AI is increasingly prominent in our lives, it becomes imperative to establish an ethical framework around its use. Events like this provoke reflection on the balance that technology and ethics must find in a constantly evolving society. The repercussions of these complaints and abuses also highlight a growing need for information and education on the consequences of artificial intelligence on modern society.
