In a tense geopolitical context, the American president Donald Trump has decided to postpone his ultimatum regarding strikes on the Iranian energy sector. This postponement coincides with the recent discussions taking place within the G7, where global leaders are addressing the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global hydrocarbon trade. This development would temporarily soothe oil markets while raising concerns about the economic impact of a prolonged conflict in the region.
Trump postpones his ultimatum to Iran
President Trump announced a ten-day delay of his ultimatum aimed at striking the power plants in Iran. This decision comes after discussions with Tehran, which the president describes as “very good.” Despite ongoing tensions, Trump stated that, in his opinion, Iran would show more eagerness to negotiate an end to hostilities.
In response to these events, the Iranian government conveyed through intermediaries an official response to a 15-point American plan, establishing its own conditions to cease hostilities. Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have intensified their activities, launching attacks on Israeli military targets, illustrating the complexity of the security situation in the region.
The G7 focuses on the security of the Strait of Hormuz
As tensions escalate, the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, was present in France to attend a G7 meeting. During this gathering, discussions focused on the need to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for hydrocarbon transport. Trump’s threat to strike energy infrastructure in Iran is also aimed at compelling Tehran to guarantee safe access to this strategic route.
The risk of open confrontation in this delicate area raises concerns about the global economy, particularly regarding oil prices. Following the postponement of the ultimatum, crude prices showed some signs of stabilization, with the price of Brent crude slightly dropping below the $107 threshold, although it remains 40% higher than its pre-conflict level.
G7 leaders are thus faced with a dilemma: how to ensure the security of this key route while navigating the rising tensions between the United States and Iran? The situation remains dynamic and calls for diplomatic solutions to avoid a major escalation.
