The Ministry of the Armed Forces recently announced the launch of a new laboratory dedicated to robotics and artificial intelligence with the aim of strengthening France’s defense capabilities. This initiative follows an agreement signed with the École nationale supérieure de techniques avancées (ENSTA), marking a decisive step for innovation in the armament sector. The new laboratory, called Defense Robotics and AI Laboratory (LARIAD), aims to become a reference player in the field of intelligent and collaborative robotics.
A strategic collaboration between ENSTA and AMIAD
On February 18, ENSTA and the Ministry Agency for Defense Artificial Intelligence (AMIAD) agreed to expand their cooperation that began in 2024. LARIAD has thus been initiated to energize the respective research programs of both entities. The project combines ENSTA’s technical expertise, which has been training high-level engineers since 1741, with AMIAD’s focus on innovative artificial intelligence solutions.
Cutting-edge ambitions in scientific research
The joint laboratory will facilitate the development of artificial intelligence solutions for navigation, collaboration, and interaction between heterogeneous robotic systems. This innovative approach will also benefit the army’s Pendragon project, which aims to establish an aerial-terrestrial combat robotic unit. For this, both entities will share robotic platforms and computing resources located on their campuses in Paris-Saclay and Brest.
A promising research ecosystem
LARIAD is intended to activate the advancement of research in robotics through academic publications and open-source contributions. AMIAD specifies that this laboratory will be an ecosystem promoting the creation of partnerships and technological valorization. This dynamism in research could position France as a leader in defense technologies based on artificial intelligence.
Government support for defense innovation
To ensure the success of this initiative, the Ministry of the Armed Forces emphasizes the importance of this rapprochement between the scientific and academic world. Bertrand Rondepierre, director of AMIAD, highlights that this synergy is crucial to meet contemporary defense challenges. Estelle Iacona, general director of ENSTA, shares this vision, revealing that this partnership is a decisive step for the development of autonomous robotic systems, whether they are terrestrial, naval, or aerial.
Toward the future of artificial intelligence in defense
Collaboration projects between AMIAD and ENSTA can leverage emerging technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence. This dynamism is part of a broader context where research in robotics is expanding rapidly. Recent revelations and major advancements, such as those regarding the subtleties of the physical world by leading AI figures, demonstrate the scale of ongoing developments. The ambitions of LARIAD are also reinforced by the technical potential offered by recent devices such as the Raspberry Pi 5, which is revolutionizing robotic applications.
