The Ministry of the Armed Forces has announced the reinforcement of its staff near Rennes, with the integration of 250 specialized engineers. Last May, the Ministry of the Armed Forces established a new entity, Amiad, to centralize AI efforts within the French defense sector. This move is part of an ambitious plan, supported by an investment of two billion euros by 2030. The mission of Amiad is twofold: to develop AI technologies tailored to military needs while ensuring the technological sovereignty of France in the field.
An innovative hub in Bruz
The site of Bruz, located south of Rennes, has been chosen to host the majority of Amiad’s activities. This Breton hub represents a crucial challenge, as it will concentrate significant resources for research and development in AI. By 2026, a specific building will be dedicated to this agency, projecting a team of 300 people, including 250 in the Rennes region.
Recruitment and training challenges
The challenge lies not only in establishing Amiad but also in the recruitment of talent. With a growing demand for specialized AI engineers, the Ministry of the Armed Forces must compete with the private sector to attract the best profiles. Currently, Amiad has only about ten engineers, but projections indicate that it should reach around a hundred recruits by the end of 2023, and double that number by 2025, focusing on qualified engineering profiles.
