In his message, he states: “Not surprisingly, China has completely violated its agreement with us”. These allegations highlight an ambient frustration over stagnant trade negotiations.
The Stakes of the Trade Agreement
The agreement in question aimed to lower tariffs, which had reached record levels, hitting up to 125% for American products and 145% for those originating from China. Trump, by highlighting this situation, reminds of the considerable economic effects brought on by these tariffs. “The very high tariffs I had put in place virtually cut them off from the American market”, he explained, referencing factory closures and the resulting social tensions.
Concerns of the American Government
The Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, also expressed that trade discussions are currently at an impasse, a sentiment shared by Jamieson Greer, White House trade representative. The latter noted that China continues to “slow down and limit” progress, particularly regarding strategic sectors such as critical minerals. The trade deficit between the two countries remains extremely high, and few significant changes have been observed in Beijing’s behavior.

In light of this situation, Bessent suggested that a direct meeting between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could prove beneficial for advancing negotiations. Such a meeting would aim to rekindle discussions often marked by provocations and retaliatory measures.

It is important to note that the growing tension between the United States and China is not limited to rhetoric. The imposed tariffs have severely slowed down trade exchanges, and the need for an agreement is more urgent than ever.
